Recognizing and Understanding ASD

Ready Psych Go provides comprehensive autism assessments for children, adolescents, and adults at our Minnetonka psychology practice, serving families throughout the Twin Cities and greater Minnesota.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects social communication, social interaction, and patterns of behavior and interests. Every individual is unique, and autism presents differently from person to person.

A comprehensive autism assessment can provide clarity regarding whether ASD best explains an individual's strengths, challenges, and experiences. An accurate diagnosis can help guide treatment recommendations, educational planning, workplace accommodations, and access to appropriate supports.

PROCESS

How the ASD Assessment Works

To begin the autism assessment process, we start with an in-depth intake session to gather information about developmental history, current concerns, and overall functioning.

We then complete a comprehensive autism evaluation using a series of standardized, age-appropriate measures. These may include assessment of social communication, adaptive functioning, behavior patterns, and cognitive functioning, depending on the individual’s needs.

Clinical Interview: A comprehensive interview to review developmental history, current concerns, medical and educational history, and goals for the assessment.

Standardized Testing: One to three in-person testing sessions using evidence-based autism measures, including the ADOS-2 and, when appropriate, the ADI-R, along with other standardized measures selected to answer the referral questions. If the autism assessment is completed as part of an integrated assessment, additional testing may be required and testing sessions may be longer.

Questionnaires: Completion of standardized questionnaires by the client and, when appropriate, parents, caregivers, teachers, or other professionals.

Collateral Information (When Appropriate): With your consent, we may obtain information from family members, schools, or healthcare providers to better understand functioning across settings.

Data Analysis: Results from interviews, standardized testing, questionnaires, records, and collateral information are integrated to determine whether diagnostic criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder are met and to identify strengths and areas of need.

Comprehensive Report: A detailed written report summarizing the assessment findings, diagnostic conclusions when applicable, and individualized recommendations.

Feedback Session: A dedicated meeting to review the results, answer questions, and discuss recommendations and next steps.

Optional Follow-Up: Additional consultation may be available to support implementation of recommendations, school planning, or coordination with other professionals.

Understanding the Why Behind Your Challenges

Psychological assessments serve a crucial purpose in identifying the root causes of an individual’s presenting concerns. They help guide effective next steps, including accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment planning.

The benefits of assessment extend beyond immediate needs, providing individuals with a valuable blueprint for navigating daily life. With a meticulous evaluation and written report, individuals can gain insight into possible contributors to stress, trauma, or other psychological challenges.

Our assessments also offer a framework for understanding and addressing neurodevelopmental differences such as ADHD, learning disorders (for example, dyslexia and dyscalculia), intellectual functioning, and cognitive giftedness.
