Understanding the Why Behind Your Challenges

Psychological assessments serve a crucial purpose in identifying the root causes of an individual’s presenting concerns. They help guide effective next steps, including accurate diagnoses and appropriate treatment planning.

The benefits of assessment extend beyond immediate needs, providing individuals with a valuable blueprint for navigating daily life. With a meticulous evaluation and written report, individuals can gain insight into possible contributors to stress, trauma, or other psychological challenges.

Our assessments also offer a framework for understanding and addressing neurodevelopmental differences such as ADHD, learning disorders (for example, dyslexia and dyscalculia), intellectual functioning, and cognitive giftedness.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Psychotherapy is a collaborative process that may address concerns related to mental health, emotional functioning, behavior, relationships, and life stressors. Treatment may involve discussion of personal experiences, thoughts, and emotions. Progress depends on many factors, including participation, effort, and external circumstances.

It is important to understand that outcomes cannot be guaranteed. Psychotherapy may involve discussing difficult or distressing experiences and may evoke strong emotions such as anxiety, sadness, frustration, or anger. At the same time, psychotherapy may lead to improved coping skills, greater self-understanding, reduction in distress, improved relationships, and increased overall well-being.

  • Psychotherapy sessions are typically scheduled for a set duration (e.g., approximately 50 minutes), though this may vary depending on the service provided.

  • All communication during the course of psychotherapy is confidential and protected under applicable U.S. privacy laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). Information will not be disclosed without your written permission except in situations where disclosure is necessary to prevent harm or is required by law. Disclosure may be required in the following circumstances with or without your permission:

    • If there is reason to believe that a minor under the age of 18 years, or a vulnerable adult, is being abused or neglected (mandated reporting).

    • If there is reason to believe that you are in immediate and serious danger of harming yourself or someone else.

    • As required by court order, subpoena, or other legal process.

    • If there are concerns that you are unsafe to operate a motor vehicle, where required under Minnesota law.

    • If disclosure is otherwise required or permitted by federal or Minnesota state law.

When working with adolescent clients (ages 12 to 17), we make every effort to protect client confidentiality and establish a trusting therapeutic relationship; at the same time, we endeavor to include parents or guardians when appropriate and necessary.

  • A minimum of 24 hours’ notice is required to cancel or reschedule an appointment. If notice is provided within 24 hours, or if an appointment is missed without notice, the full session fee may be charged. Repeated late cancellations or missed appointments may result in discontinuation of services.

  • Services are primarily provided on a self-pay basis. Professional services are rendered and charged to the client, not the insurance company, and all fees are the responsibility of the client. You are responsible for verifying any mental health benefits and for submitting insurance claims for potential reimbursement.

At times, the practice may accept insurance or work with third-party payers. In such cases, coverage, authorization, and any remaining balances remain the responsibility of the client.
